“Exploration of the possibilities of shaping with slip”

Rebecca Maeder, Swiss artist was born in 1978 in Bienne (CH). She currently lives and works in South Korea.

After her formation in 1999-2003, at the Applied Arts School  of Vevey (CH), she opened her own studio.

She participated in many international competitions and received many awards (often the 1st prize or Grand Prix) due to the quality of her work.

She has exhibited several times in Vallauris, namely,  the International Ceramics Biennale in 2002 and 2008  and in 2009 in the “Espace Grandjean”.

She obtained a Korean government scholarship and since September 2011, she is completing her studies at the “Seoul National University” (KR) for a Master in Ceramics.

To achieve Coelenteron series and its variants, Rebecca Maeder pours the slip on balloons. These famous inventions of Michael Faraday are  used as templates which allow the realization of rounded shapes with surfaces covered with slip,  more or less regular drops and possible asperities : small blisters or craters (…). While drying, the balloons are deflated. Firing acts as a necessary means to sustain the whole shape and  as to not  transform the material or give it a different look “. (Yves Peltier, from the catalog of the Biennial of Vallauris 2008).
